The Elephant

The Elephant is the largest land animal in the world. An average calf weighs 250
lbs at birth and can live as long as 70 years. The largest Elephant on record
weighed 26,000 lbs. Despite having an estimated population of 500,000 today,
that is half of what it was 30 years ago.
An adult Elephant needs 300 lbs of vegetation a day to survive and they use their
distinct features to help find it. They use their tusk to dig for water, roots, and to
debark trees. Their trunks have over 40,000 individual muscles and are capable
of holding 15 quarts of water.
Elephants spend 16 hours a day searching for food and are extremely vulnerable
to hunters. They are hunted for their tusk and with declining areas to find
vegetation, they are easy targets for poachers.
Currently the Elephant is a protected species and with the efforts of the
International Elephant Foundation their numbers will rebound. Please visit the
International Elephant Foundation to see the honorable job they are doing to
protect these beautiful animals.
