The Polar Bear
The Polar Bear is the largest predator found on land, reaching heights of almost
10 feet. A full grown male can weigh up to 1500 lbs and the largest on record
weighed 2210 lbs. Polar Bear cubs weigh less then 2 lbs at birth and will nurse
from their mothers for 2 years.

Polar Bears hunt on frozen sheets of ice and their diet consists mainly of seals.
They are excellent hunters and can smell prey up to a mile away. Because of
global warming, their hunting areas are shrinking and food is becoming scarce.

They are considered a marine mammal and are efficient swimmers, reaching
speeds of 6 miles per hour. They have been seen swimming as far as 200 miles
from the nearest land.

There are around 25,000 Polar Bears in the wild and by the year 2050 those
numbers are expected to decline by two-thirds. They are a vulnerable species
and need help from further declines in population.

With the work of Polar Bears International there is hope that the Polar Bear will
survive. Please visit Polar Bears International and see the efforts they are
making to help.
